"As the owner of a substantial home on East Cooper Avenue in Aspen, Colorado, my wife and I found ourselves facing a major problem with integrity of the structure of our home. We are absent owners of this holiday home, as our permanent residence is in London. We bought the home, which was built in 1999 by a reputable Aspen builder, some 11 years ago. This, from our perspective new house, was our pride and joy and over the past 10 years, no expense was spared maintaining the property. During a recent summer storm, water entered the house and using laser levelling it was determined that the spill levels, of the concrete granite covered deck, were at fault. A drain blocked by cottonwood pollen caused water to spill over thresholds into the house. This fundament deficiency in design of our deck prompted us to instruct the remove the concrete slab and to replace it with an open membrane design. When this work was implemented we discovered to our horror that a substantial amount of rot had been taking place under the hidden membrane. The damage had affected the structural integrity of the roof over our living room. As part of the protocol to restore the woodwork and deal with the effects of rot, fungus and mould, we engage Jim Baker of HealthSafe to guide us through the process. Jims expertise and resolute addressing of what needed to be done was exceeded by his empathy for what my wife and I were facing, particularly this late in the season with winter upon us. It was clear that Jim had real appreciation of what needed to be done, organising a Helpers team to implement control protocols, whilst our wonderful builder rallied to get the worst out of the way as soon as humanly possible, so that we could once again breath, whilst my wife and I were holed up in the basement of the house, not wanting to return to London until our precious home in Aspen, was safe and on the mend. We have been given a comprehensive report by HealthSafe and after much cleaning received the “all clear” on the eradication work and safe air tests, so that we can truly feel that this episode is in the past. Clearly there was a price to pay for all this work, but bearing in mind the extent of the problem discovered, it is a credit to Jim and the various teams involved, that the process of reconstruction was started within days from our arrival in Aspen and completed only 4 weeks later. "Working with Jim at HealthSafe was a fantastic experience! His attention to detail was excellent and his sense of urgency to complete the work was second to none. He provided thorough explanations of his findings and also provided recommendations for resolution and remediation. We used HealthSafe for both mold and asbestos inspections and would absolutely hire Jim and his team again in the future.
